Why Standard Breakdown Cover Often Won't Cover Your Taxi
Many taxi drivers assume their personal breakdown membership covers them at work. In many cases it does not. Standard consumer breakdown policies commonly exclude vehicles used for hire and reward, or limit assistance to social and domestic use. If you break down with a passenger on board and your provider refuses to attend, you have a stranded passenger, a stranded vehicle, and no income.
Taxi-specific breakdown cover is designed for commercial use: the provider knows the vehicle is a working taxi and covers it accordingly.
What Taxi Breakdown Cover Typically Includes
- Roadside assistance — a technician attends and attempts a repair at the roadside
- Local recovery — if the vehicle cannot be fixed on the spot, it is towed to a nearby garage
- Nationwide recovery — higher tiers recover you, your passengers, and the vehicle to any UK destination
- Home start — assistance when the vehicle will not start at your home address (vital before an early airport run)
- Onward travel — some policies help passengers complete their journey
Exact benefits vary by provider and tier, so always check the policy wording.
What It Usually Excludes
- Pre-existing faults and repeat call-outs for the same unrepaired problem
- Routine maintenance failures — worn tyres, flat batteries from age, running out of fuel (though many will attend for a charge)
- Vehicle recovery after an accident (that is handled by your motor insurance)
- The cost of parts and garage repairs — breakdown cover gets you to the garage; it does not pay the repair bill
How Much Does Taxi Breakdown Cover Cost?
Taxi breakdown cover typically costs more than a private car policy because working vehicles cover higher mileage and call out assistance more often. Pricing depends on the level of cover, your vehicle's age, and whether you buy it standalone or as an add-on to your taxi insurance policy. As a rough guide, expect a meaningful but modest annual cost — often less than the income lost from a single day off the road.
Standalone Cover vs an Insurance Add-On
There are two common routes:
- Add-on to your taxi insurance — convenient, one renewal date, and often competitively priced when arranged together
- Standalone taxi breakdown policy — lets you choose a specialist provider and keep breakdown cover if you switch insurer
Neither is universally better. When we arrange taxi insurance, we can discuss whether an add-on is available and how it compares.
Five Questions to Ask Before You Buy
- Does the policy explicitly cover hire and reward / taxi use?
- Is there a limit on call-outs per year?
- Are passengers covered for onward travel?
- Is home start included, or a paid extra?
- How old can the vehicle be? (Some providers exclude older vehicles or charge more)
Reducing the Chance You'll Need It
Breakdown cover is a safety net, not a substitute for maintenance. High-mileage taxi work is hard on brakes, tyres, batteries, and cooling systems. Regular servicing, tyre checks, and attending to warning lights early keep you earning and keep your call-out record clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is breakdown cover included in taxi insurance?
Not usually as standard. Some insurers include a basic level on higher-tier policies; most offer it as an optional extra. Check your schedule rather than assuming.
Can I use personal breakdown cover and just not mention the taxi work?
We strongly advise against it. If the provider attends and finds the vehicle in use as a taxi, they can refuse assistance, cancel the membership, and you may struggle to obtain cover honestly afterwards.
Does breakdown cover include misfuelling?
Some policies include misfuel draining and flushing; many exclude it or charge. If you drive a diesel and hire cars often, it is worth checking.
What about electric taxis?
Most major providers now attend electric vehicles, and many offer recovery to a charging point if you run out of charge. If you drive an EV taxi, confirm this before buying.
