A legal requirement for any driver carrying passengers or goods for payment. Speak to a specialist broker who understands your trade.
Hire and reward insurance is a specialist class of motor insurance that covers drivers who use their vehicle to carry passengers or goods in exchange for payment. Standard private car insurance — even comprehensive cover — explicitly excludes this activity. If you drive without the correct hire and reward cover, your insurance is invalid and you are committing a criminal offence.
The term covers a broad range of commercial driving activities, including private hire (minicabs), hackney carriage (black cabs), courier work, and chauffeur services. The specific policy you need depends on your licence type, vehicle, and the nature of your work.
As a specialist taxi insurance broker, My Taxi Insurance works with multiple insurers and managing general agents (MGAs) who operate in this market. We do not offer instant online quotes — instead, you speak directly to a broker who will take the time to understand your circumstances and search the market on your behalf.
Important
My Taxi Insurance is a broker, not an insurer. We arrange cover on your behalf from specialist markets. All cover is subject to insurer acceptance and underwriting terms. We do not guarantee acceptance or specific pricing.
Hire and reward splits into two quite different kinds of work, and they need different policies. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake drivers make.
Who: Private hire and minicab drivers, hackney carriage and black cab drivers, chauffeurs, and app-based drivers for Uber, Bolt or Ola.
What you need: A taxi or private hire policy written on a hire and reward basis, matched to the licence your local authority has issued. Passenger liability is included as standard on most taxi policies.
Where we fit: This is what we arrange. We search multiple specialist markets and place the cover for you.
Who: Parcel couriers and multi-drop drivers, Amazon Flex, Evri and DPD drivers, man-and-van operators, and courier fleets.
What you need: A courier or delivery policy written on a hire and reward basis. Goods in transit cover is separate again — it protects the items you are carrying, not the vehicle, and is not included automatically.
Where we fit: We arrange this too. See our courier and van insurance page for what we can place — the one exception is single-vehicle fast food delivery, which is outside our appetite.
Minicab drivers, app-based drivers (Uber, Bolt, Ola), and any driver carrying pre-booked passengers for payment.
Licensed black cab and hackney carriage drivers who can pick up passengers hailing from the street.
Businesses operating 2 or more licensed vehicles, including mixed private hire and hackney carriage fleets.
Carrying parcels or goods for payment is hire and reward too. We arrange courier, multi-drop and van cover — see the delivery section below.
Hire and reward policies come at the same three levels as ordinary motor insurance. Which one is right depends on the value of your vehicle and what you could afford to replace yourself.
Comprehensive
Covers damage to your own vehicle as well as injury or damage you cause to other people, whether or not the accident was your fault.
Third party, fire and theft
Covers injury or damage you cause to others, plus loss of your own vehicle by fire or theft. It does not pay for accident damage to your own vehicle.
Third party only
The legal minimum. Covers injury or damage you cause to other people and their property, with nothing for your own vehicle.
The common optional extras are public liability cover, a replacement vehicle, breakdown assistance, windscreen cover and legal expenses. None of them are standard: each is offered at the insurer's discretion, with its own limits and excesses, and some are separate policies rather than motor add-ons. Tell us which of these matter to you and we will factor them into the search.
Covers claims from members of the public for injury or property damage connected to your business but not to the driving itself — a passenger who trips on the kerb as you help with their luggage, for example. Distinct from the passenger liability included in the motor policy.
Availability: Arranged as a separate policy rather than a motor add-on. Taxi liability insurance.
Puts you back on the road while your vehicle is repaired after a claim. For taxi work this matters more than it does for private motoring, because the replacement has to be licensed for the plate you hold — an ordinary courtesy car is no use if it cannot legally carry fares.
Availability: Offered by some insurers as an add-on and by others not at all; where it is included, check the vehicle supplied is licence-appropriate.
Roadside recovery for the vehicle. Trade policies can extend to recovering the vehicle and getting passengers onward, which a personal breakdown membership will not do.
Availability: Available as an add-on from some insurers, subject to the level chosen. Taxi breakdown cover explained.
Repair or replacement of glass without the claim affecting your no claims discount on most policies. High-mileage drivers use this more than any other extra.
Availability: Included as standard on some comprehensive policies and an optional extra on others; excesses vary.
Funds the cost of recovering uninsured losses after a non-fault accident — your excess, loss of earnings while off the road — and legal representation if you are prosecuted over a driving matter.
Availability: Usually an optional add-on with a stated limit of indemnity.
If you deliver food or parcels for payment, you are carrying goods for hire and reward and your ordinary car insurance will not cover you. This applies whether you drive for Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Amazon Flex or a local courier firm, and it applies from the first paid drop.
Two separate things are worth getting straight. Hire and reward covers your vehicle being used commercially.Goods in transit covers the items you are carrying if they are lost, stolen or damaged. Couriers often need both, and buying one does not give you the other. We arrange both.
We arrange both sides. Parcel couriers and multi-drop drivers, van hire and reward including man-and-van work, and courier fleets are all within appetite — see courier and van insurance for the detail. The one exception is single-vehicle fast food delivery: we can look at fast food delivery as a fleet, but not for a single driver, and we would rather say so here than after you have filled in a form.
If you run taxi and delivery work together, call us on 01733 263311 and we will look at the whole operation on one call.
Need cover for days rather than a year? Our partner GoShorty offers short-term courier and taxi cover online. We act as an introducer only — GoShorty is a firm authorised and regulated by the FCA, and we do not arrange, advise on or administer those policies. See short-term options.
Hire and reward insurance is a specialist type of motor insurance required for any driver who carries passengers or goods in exchange for payment. Standard private car insurance specifically excludes this activity. Without it, you are not legally covered to operate.
Taxi insurance is a form of hire and reward insurance, but hire and reward is a broader category. It covers private hire drivers, hackney carriage drivers, couriers, and others who use their vehicle commercially. The specific policy type depends on your licence and usage.
Yes. To drive for Uber, Bolt, or any private hire platform in the UK, you must hold a valid private hire vehicle (PHV) licence and appropriate hire and reward insurance. Uber provides third-party cover while the app is active, but you need your own policy for all other times.
Costs vary significantly based on your vehicle, driving history, area of operation, and the level of cover required. As a specialist broker, we search multiple markets to find competitive options. Call us on 01733 263311 for a tailored quote.
The common optional extras on a UK hire and reward policy are public liability cover, a replacement vehicle or courtesy car, breakdown assistance, windscreen cover and legal expenses cover. None of them are standard — each one is offered at the insurer's discretion, with its own limits, excesses and price, and some are arranged as separate policies rather than as motor add-ons. For taxi work, check that any replacement vehicle offered is licensed for the plate you hold, because an ordinary courtesy car cannot legally carry fares.
Yes, in many cases. We work with specialist insurers who understand the taxi trade and can consider drivers with previous claims or convictions. Each case is assessed individually. Contact our team to discuss your specific circumstances.
Social, domestic, and pleasure (SDP) insurance covers personal use of your vehicle only. It does not cover any commercial activity. If you carry passengers or goods for payment without hire and reward cover, your insurance is invalid and you are driving illegally.
Yes. Delivering food or parcels for payment — for Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Amazon Flex or a courier firm — is carrying goods for hire and reward, and standard car insurance excludes it. Food delivery and parcel courier work are usually rated differently, so check you are buying the right one for the work you actually do. We arrange parcel and multi-drop courier cover, and fast food delivery on a fleet basis, but not single-vehicle fast food delivery.
No, and they are often confused. Hire and reward covers the use of your vehicle to carry goods for payment. Goods in transit cover protects the items themselves if they are lost, stolen or damaged while you are carrying them. Couriers frequently need both, and neither one includes the other automatically.
Yes. We arrange courier and van hire and reward cover for parcel and multi-drop drivers, man-and-van and removals work, and courier fleets, alongside our taxi and private hire products. The one exception is single-vehicle fast food delivery, which is outside our appetite — we can consider fast food delivery as a fleet, but not for a single driver. For short-term courier cover we can introduce you to our partner GoShorty; we act as an introducer only and do not arrange, advise on or administer those policies.
